Unable to edit Texas Tech websites using FTP

Symptoms

You are unable to connect to edit a website on the TTU network using FTP.

Cause

FTP does not meet State of Texas mandates for security and is unsupported for connecting to edit your website. The TTU IT Division took measures in August of 2011 to block FTP traffic across TTUnet and inbound FTP traffic from the outside Internet.

Resolution

Use WebDAV or a file sharing (SMB/UNC) connection method in order to modify your website files, depending on what particular technology is supported for that host. Other websites hosted by specific colleges or departments may use other connection methods, such as FTPS or SFTP. Consult with the server administrator to determine the exact connection method for the website you are attempting to author.

OUTCOME

You will be able to connect to edit your website by using a supported protocol.
