Your computer's date or time is not updating from the Internet automatically

Symptoms

You have a computer that is not joined to the TTU domain, and its time/date settings are configured to update automatically from the Internet using NTP. (Common NTP servers are time.windows.com, time.apple.com, and time.nist.gov.) However, the date and/or time is not updating from the Internet as expected.

Cause

All inbound and outbound NTP traffic is blocked by the TTU Internet firewall.

Resolution

If you are using your computer primarily on the TTU network

Configure your computer's time/date settings to update from the NTP server ntp.ttu.edu.

If you are not using your computer primarily on the TTU network

Configure your settings to update from the default server (time.apple.com for Mac users or time.windows.com for Windows users). You may also choose to use the National Institute of Standards and Technology time server, time.nist.gov.

Instructions

Step-by-step instructions are linked below for both Mac and Windows customers:

OUTCOME

Your computer's time/date will update automatically by using the server ntp.ttu.edu if you configured it that way, or it will update from the Internet once your computer is no longer on the TTU network.

More information

Traffic from the outside Internet cannot reach ntp.ttu.edu due to firewall restrictions. Therefore, if you are primarily outside TTUnet, use an alternate server for your computer's automatic time/date updates.

Traffic from TTU also cannot reach outside NTP servers due to the firewall restrictions. Therefore, if you are primarily on TTUnet, use ntp.ttu.edu for your computer's automatic time/date updates.
