Error: "Access Denied" when attempting to sign in to NIH electronic Research Administration (eRA) modules


Symptoms

When trying to sign in to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) electronic Research Administration (eRA) modules, you receive the following message:

Access Denied

Login to NIH systems requires multi-factor authentication (MFA). Either your institution does not support multi-factor authentication, or your institution has not enabled your account for multi-factor authentication. Please contact your local IT department at Telecommunications Network Systems to inquire about the ability to support multi-factor authentication for your account. If multi-factor authentication is not available through your institution, you may also register for and use an account from login.gov.

Cause

NIH has increased level of security to sign in as of September 15, 2021.

Resolution

Use a login.gov account to sign in. If you do not have an account with login.gov, you will need to create one.


OUTCOME

You will be able to access the eRA modules successfully.
