Understanding the potential vulnerability of Wi-Fi networks

Explanation

The threat

Wireless networks (Wi-Fi) in the home create a convenient environment for Internet access. Equipment manufacturers may advertise that their equipment is secure and safe right out of the box. In reality, however, the biggest challenge for home Wi-Fi users is securing their wireless network.

Often, home wireless networks are not secured and are left open for public access. This makes them potential targets of "drive-by hacking", in which hackers use a non-secure network to access the Internet on your dime and may release malware or steal personal information.
