Third party wants contents of student's TechMail account

Explanation

Occasionally, individuals other than the account owner may request access to the contents of a mailbox. A request of this nature results in some privacy, security, and logistical issues. Although individuals do have the right to a certain amount of privacy with their mailbox, those resources are technically the property of Texas Tech University.

Texas Tech University will fully comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), as well as any other applicable laws, when granting mailbox access to a third party.

Requests for content of another individual's TechMail mailbox should be directed to the TTU chief information security officer (CISO), Mr. Jeff Barrington, at jeff.barrington@ttu.edu.

OUTCOME

The CISO will review the request. If approved, the third party is able to retrieve the contents of the mailbox.
