eRaider password policies

No one at Texas Tech University or from anywhere else should ask for your password.

Explanation

What are the eRaider password requirements?

eRaider passwords:

  • Must be 9-25 alphanumeric characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, ()\-$%&!@^)
  • Must contain uppercase and lowercase characters
  • Must contain a number
  • Must not contain a number as the first or last character
  • Must not be on a list of known compromised passwords
  • Must not be reused within a one year period

What are some recommendations when choosing a password?

  • Choose a password that is not easy to guess.
  • String together uncommon words.
  • Never share your password with anyone, including any IT support person or Texas Tech representative.
  • Use a different password for every site.

Where did the eRaider password requirements come from?

eRaider password policies have been put in place to protect the security of your account and that of Texas Tech. They were drafted based on the Texas Administrative Code and were adapted to the Texas Tech community by security committees represented by areas from TTU, TTUHSC, TTUHSC El Paso, and the TTU System.

Creating a strong password

If you need assistance creating a password that you can remember which meets the criteria, here is some information that may be helpful.

Make the password difficult to guess but easy to remember. Substitute numbers or special characters for letters. Some examples are:

  • liveshrimp is a bad password.
  • L1veShr1mp is better and satisfies the rules, but setting a pattern of 1st letter capitalized, and i's substituted by 1's can be guessed.
  • L!v3sHr1Mp is far better, the capitalization and substitution of characters is not predictable.
