Definition of docking station

A docking station provides a simplified way of "plugging-in" a laptop computer to common peripherals. A dock can allow some laptop computers to become a substitute for a desktop computer, without sacrificing the mobile computing functionality of the computer.

Depending on the model, a docking station may support connecting displays, keyboards, mice, printers, external hard drives, or even any USB device.

Some docking stations may require specific software in order to operate.
