A denial of service (DOS) attack happens when a hacker send enormous amounts of bogus traffic to access the router, all of which must be tracked as if it were legitimate. Eventually, router operations grind to a halt and traffic no longer passes.

In a DOS attack, the Web server identifies the suspected source and blocks any more incoming packets from it.
