How to: Locate the IP address on a Mac

Instructions

Public IP address

If you are able to browse the web, navigate to https://whatismyipaddress.com.

Outcome

The website displays your public IP address.

Private IP address

  1. Open System Settings.

  2. In the left-hand side pane, choose the Network tab. Then, click Wi-Fi.

    TIP: If you are looking for the IP address for wireless connection, click Wi-Fi. If you are looking for the IP address of a wired connection, click Ethernet or the name of your wired network adapter. In the screenshot below, we are looking for the IP address for the wireless connection.

  3. On the right-hand side of the network to which your Mac is connected, click Details.

Outcome

Under the TCP/IP tab, the private IP address of your device is displayed next to "IP address", "IPv6 address", or both, depending on the TCP/IP configuration used by your network provider.
