How to: Generate a Wi-Fi diagnostics report on your Mac


Introduction

While holding the option key on your keyboard, click the Wi-Fi icon in your Mac's menu bar. Choose Open Wireless Diagnostics.

Instructions

1) Hold down the option key on your keyboard and click on the Wi-Fi icon in your Mac's menu bar. From the menu that appears, choose Open Wireless Diagnostics.

2) Click Continue.

3) If prompted for credentials, type a username and password with administrative permissions on this Mac. Then, click OK.

4) Please wait while tests are run.

5) Mark the radio button next to "Continue to summary" and click Continue.

6) If desired, you may type information into the text field about your wireless network, the location where you ran the test, etc. This may be helpful later if you run multiple tests or if a system administrator reviewing the report needs it.

EXAMPLE: This test was run in the Student Union Building just inside the west entrance.

When ready to proceed, click Continue.

7) Click Continue.

8) Please wait while the report is created.

9) If you like, you can click any of the information icons (blue circle with an "i") to display helpful information.

10) When ready to proceed, click Done.

OUTCOME

You have generated your wireless diagnostics report. It is located in the /var/tmp folder of your startup drive. Your Mac will automatically open that folder for you after the report is generated.

You may wish to share the report with technical support personnel for assistance in advanced troubleshooting.
